The Powder Room: All of My Beauty Secrets in One Place

You may be familiar with my Tiktok series “The Powder Room”, inspired by the powder rooms of the 18th and 19th centuries. The powder room was a small room designed for women to freshen up and powder their nose prior to events or gatherings.

The Powder Room

The powder rooms were often grandly decorated areas complete with marble floor, gold accents, and exquisite wallpapers. With my adoration for the old Hollywood aesthetic, I wanted to integrate a glamorous part of history into my social media content.

I shifted my former advice get ready with me videos into my new powder room format, touching up my makeup while giving girly advice on glamour, mannerisms, and daily life.

The now 28 (and growing) part series has garnered over 300k views since first created, so I thought it long overdue to bring The Powder Room to the Innasya blog.

Beauty & Hygiene Tips

For as long as I can remember I have had a pretty extensive everything shower routine. While products have changed throughout the years, my regimen has remained consistent.

Pre-Shower

  1. Open lymph nodes and dry brush body with swiping motions towards the heart

For glowing, radiant skin dry brushing should be an essential in your weekly routines. By removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores, the results of regularly using a dry brush is the kind of skin glow you’ve always longed for. Dry brushing improves circulation aiding in digestion, reducing the appearance of cellulite, and stimulating the lymphatic system.

The Shower Routine

  1. Allow skin to soak in the warm water while completing the hair care routine

  2. Double shampoo hair

  3. Apply hair mask / conditioner and let sit while we complete the body portion of the routine

  4. Exfoliate body using a body scrub / exfoliant

  5. Shave body with baby oil

  6. Rinse hair mask / conditioner out of hair

  7. Wash body with unscented soap

  8. Wash face while doing a lymphatic drainage massage

Double shampooing is a crucial part for clean, healthy hair. The first round of shampoo removes the product build up in your hair, while the second cleans it. Most hair masks and conditioners require remaining on your hair for 5-15 minutes. Rather than wasting water, that’s the perfect time to complete the body portion of your everything shower routine.

Before even thinking of picking up a razor, your body should be exfoliated. Exfoliation before shaving helps to prevent ingrown hairs and razor burn. Another trick to avoid razor burn is to shave with baby oil. As baby oil is moisturising it creates a protective barrier on the skin and enhances razor glide. Especially beneficial for sensitive skin, shaving with baby oil leaves the skin hydrated and smooth and allows for a closer shave.

Skip the fragrances in the shower and keep them for the post-shower routine. Use an unscented soap to wash your body as it reduces skin irritation and personally leaves me feeling cleaner. Don’t forget to wash behind your ears.

As for facial lymphatic drainage massages, start by opening your lymph nodes. You can watch my lymphatic drainage massage tutorial here

Post-Shower Routine

Haircare
  1. Dry hair with a microfibre towel

  2. Allow to air dry while applying face and body products

  3. Apply hair treatments, leave in conditioners, and heat protectant

  4. Blow dry to 90% dry and style with the Dyson Airwrap

Regular bath towels are rough and damaging to the hair. Instead opt for a microfibre towel as they reduce frizz, breakage, and damage caused by friction. Another benefit of the microfibre towel is that they actually dry your hair faster due to their absorbent material.

Skincare
  1. 10 minute LED red light therapy mask

  2. Apply face oil to face and pluck eyebrows & shave face with a facial razor

  3. Wash face

  4. Exfoliate with glycolic acid on a cotton round - allow to sit for 20 minutes

  5. Apply undereye cream, moisturiser, lash serum, and lip balm

My LED red light therapy mask is my favourite step in my skincare routine. LED red light therapy reduces inflammation, promotes collagen production, and boosts cellular energy. With its main benefits aligned with wrinkles and acne, it stimulates collagen and elastin production, and improves overall texture.

Oil-planing reduces irritation and sensitivity while hydrating and nourishing the skin. I typically only include step 2 of my skincare routine once a month to remove peach fuzz from my face for a smoother makeup application. By applying oil to your face prior to shaving, the oil creates a protective barrier on the skin and allows the blade to glide easier.

Glycolic acid is a deep exfoliant removing dead skin cells, reducing acne, and aiding in the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Glycolic acid usage has seen results of clearing skin and improving texture as it boosts collagen production while hydrating and exfoliating skin.

An eye cream is a crucial step of your skincare routine not only the disappearance of eye bags but the reduction in creased concealer when applying makeup. I believe there is no age too young to begin the prevention of aging so use your under eye creams!

Body Care
  1. Glycolic acid on a small cotton round applied on the armpits

  2. Apply body lotion / milk / cream to the body and finish with a body oil

  3. Apply teeth whitening strips

The Beauty Tips I Follow

Accompanied by the everything shower routine, there are a few other additional beauty tips that I have integrated into my daily routines. The first being drinking 1-3L of water per day.

I never, ever sleep in my makeup. Even when I get home from the club at 3am, my makeup is coming off before my head hits that pillow. I double cleanse every evening using a cleansing balm to remove makeup prior to washing my face, and I sleep on silk pillowcases every night (remembering to wash them at least once per week). I wash my makeup brushes once per month and replace my beauty blender every 3 months.

I start each morning with movement, whether that be a walk or my Nikolas pilates. Beginning the day with exercise increases endorphins, boosts metabolism, and increases mental clarity and energy. To balance my circadian rhythm I am ensuring my face touches the sun within the first hour of waking up and consistently ensuring to drink a glass of water before my morning coffee.

Sun damage causes more than just a sun burn but premature aging, wrinkles, sagging, actinic keratoses, and leathery skin. By creating a lack of collagen, the sun can cause your skin to thin and makes it less elastic which makes sun protection the most important part of any skincare routine. When I first added a sunscreen to my routine, it’s place was the last step in my skincare routine, displayed with my skincare so it was already present in the lineup.

When applying your skincare, or sunscreen, any excess product, add to your neck and the back of your hands. Your hands and neck are the first things to age so we can’t be neglecting them.

I know it can be tempting to pop your pimples and pick your skin. I, myself, struggle with the temptation of the satisfaction so to eliminate the chance of my hands touching my blemishes, I patch them!

Without adequate sleep, your glow will be non-existent. A good nighttime routine ensures a quality sleep. Look good, feel good is one of my rules for life, so romanticised sleepwear is essential. Please only ever sleep in cotton underwear though. I sleep with an eye mask each night and always have a bottle of water by my bed. To reduce hair breakage during the night, sleep with your hair in a loose plait.

The devil on your shoulder convincing you how incredible a late night snack would taste is tempting but you really shouldn’t be eating after 7-8pm (if you can help it of course). Technically our biggest meal of the day is supposed to be breakfast. Eating late at night is fighting against your body's natural circadian rhythm. Afterall, food gives you energy therefore making it harder for you to sleep if you’re eating close to bedtime. By eating in the late evenings your body has no time to burn off the calories you just ate therefore storing them as fat while you sleep. There should be a 3 hour window between your last meal and sleep.

Fashion

I used to preach a capsule wardrobe, now I believe the opposite. While having a capsule wardrobe can be useful, I feel the expression of personal style and authentic self aids in a happier, more confident lifestyle as the best gift you can give yourself is to live as your authentic self. If you need assistance discovering your personal style, Hi, I’m Innasya, owner of Innasya Attire. You can book a free consultation with me here or order a personally styled lookbook here

Quality over quantity would be my biggest tip for style development and improvement. Along with saving your money in the long run, buying quality pieces that will last you more than a season is exponentially better for the environment than jumping onto microtrends and poorly made garments simply because you can buy more of them. In a year you’ll look back and think “what was I wearing?”

Don’t be afraid to try new things! Fashion is supposed to be fun, it’s the expression of one's inner self, your introduction to the world before you even open your mouth so have fun with it.

At the end of each season is when I like to clear out my wardrobe, parting with anything that I didn’t wear. But, how can you remember what you did and didn’t wear? During my seasonal closet clean out my coathangers are all placed backwards. Once I wear a piece I put it back in my cupboard with the coat hanger facing the right way, clearly showcasing what I have and have not touched throughout the season.

For flattering outfits that not only make you look good but feel good too you need to learn how to dress for your body shape, the silhouettes that work, the shapes that flatter, and the figures that don’t. You can download my shopping and styling guides here
